During the liberation of
the Independent North American Indian State of Ganienkeh, the
Mohawks sworn to secrecy to the amount of people that were
preset at the village-just as we must do with the birth of our
children, we must never let our enemy know how many of our
children are born FREE.
My sister who honored our instructions from the Creator and had
her daughter out on the land, away from the chaos of the
hospital system, I gave her much respect. I too will do the
same. I was honored to be there during the birth of her
daughter, which was the most powerful experience I have been a
part of. She gave birth outside surrounded by snow-capped
mountains, with a f ire at the foot of her bed, fir boughs laid
upon
the ground, women hand drumming and smudge burning. Her mother,
father, brothers, sisters and companion were all there with her.
I give her much respect for her choice to register the birth
within the white-man's system.
Being 7 months pregnant
at this present time I look forward to having our baby out on
the Land-this is where the strength and honor of Indian women is
earned. This is nothing new, our ancestors have always had their
babies out on the Land, the traditional way. We built and formed
Nations this way, we became strong warriors this way and we
raised our children knowing that this was the only way.
That this was the only way to honor the Creator and the life of
the child was to welcome them into this world-the Natural World.
As the women, the
children bearers, the life-givers of our Nations we need to
begin to realize that it has only been a short time since
contact and colonization and only a short time since hospitals,
western medicines, painkillers and 'doctors'. We need to let go
of the dependency upon their system and stop fearing what we
already know is the right ways to give birth. we don't need the
Canadian, American or any foreign occupying force to tell us,
the Indigenous women of the Land, that we need to register our
babies, that we need to go for regular check-ups in their
hospitals, that we need an ultrasound of painkiller.
What we need, is to let
our own People know that we will rise with a new spirit of
warrior women who will reclaim our rightful place in our
societies and give birth to a new generation free from the
oppression and invisible to their system and control. We can
have our babies free-we can let our babies live free. Our
Nations depend on us-the future depends on us.
