North Dakota, Three Affiliated Tribes
New Town, ND and White Shield, ND
I was very honored to attend Arikara Celebration powwow, employee appreciation event, speak at a culture camp, and judge the ImagiNative Talent Show II. I was asked to speak at a youth culture camp! It was so nice to be able to share my platforms of mental health and positive representation through sharing my own journey and conversing with all the youth there of their own experiences. We talked and compared of traditional ways and shared stories about our ceremonies.
I loved North Dakota! What a beautiful state! I enjoyed attending the Arikara Celebration powwow in White Shield, where I saw old friends and made new ones. I loved the boots and hats special and met the outgoing royalties. I attended employee appreciation events for staff and even won a cup in bingo! I spoke in front of and with the youth at a culture camp where I learned about Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara culture and history. My final night in New Town was spent judging a youth talent show. I watched singing, dancing, and a Michael Jackson impersonation! My highlight of the trip was swimming and kayaking in Lake Sakakawea with the youth at the culture camp and participating in my first sweat! Thank you to the Three Affiliated Tribes for having me! As a cultural goodwill ambassador of Native American and Indigenous Peoples. I learned so much about the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara people’s culture and history. I always enjoy being able to compare our people’s ways of living and traditional ways. I was able to see the earth lodges, the traditional homes of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara. I thought it was so interesting that they would serve as lodging through summer and winter months, either keeping warmer or cooler if needed.
